The Paradox of Choice
The Paradox of Natural Mothering by Christina Bobel, Single or married, working mothers are, if not the norm, no longer exceptional. These days, women who stay at home to raise their children seem to be making a radical lifestyle choice. Indeed, the women at the center of The Paradox of Natural Mothering have renounced consumerism and careerism in order to reclaim home and family. These natural mothers favor parenting practices that set them apart from the mainstream: home birth, extended breast feeding, home schooling, and natural health care. Regarding themselves as part of a movement, natural mothers believe they are changing society one child, one family at a time. Author Chris Bobel profiles thirty natural mothers, probing into their choices and asking whether they are reforming or conforming to women's traditional role. Bobel's subjects say that they have chosen to follow their nature rather than social imperatives. Embracing such lifestyle alternatives as voluntary simplicity and attachment parenting, they place family above status and personal achievement. Bobel illuminates the paradoxes of natural mothering, the ways in which these women resist the trappings of upward mobility but acquiesce to a kind of biological determinism and conventional gender scripts.
The Paradox of Choice: Why More Is Less In the spirit of Alvin Toffler's "Future Shock," Schwartz's work is a "brilliant" ("Christian Science Monitor) and "persuasive" ("Business Week") social critique of people's obsession with choice, and how it contributes to anxiety, dissatisfaction, and regret.
Banach-Tarski paradox - First stated by Stefan Banach and Alfred Tarski in 1924, the Banach-Tarski paradox or Hausdorff-Banach-Tarski paradox is the famous "doubling the ball" paradox, which states that by using the axiom of choice it is possible to take a solid ball in 3-dimensional space, cut it up into finitely many (non-measurable) pieces and, moving them using only rotations and translations, reassemble the pieces into two balls of the same radius as the original. Banach and Tarski intended ... Liberal paradox - The liberal paradox is a logical paradox advanced by Amartya Sen, building on the work of Kenneth Arrow and his general possibility theorem, that showed that within a system of menu-independent social choice, it is impossible to have both a commitment to "Minimal Liberty", which was defined as the ability to order tuples of choices, and Pareto optimality. Allais paradox - The Allais ‘paradox’, more neutrally described at the Allais problem, is a choice problem designed by Maurice Allais to show that reasonable individual choices are inconsistent with the predictions of expected utility theory. The problem consists of two choices between pairs of gambles. Generalized expected utility - The expected utility model developed by John von Neumann and Oskar Morgenstern dominated decision theory from its formulation in 1944 until the late 1970s, despite powerful criticism from Maurice Allais and Daniel Ellsberg who showed that, in certain choice problems, decisions were usually inconsistent with the axioms of expected utility theory. These problems are usually referred to as the Allais paradox and Ellsberg paradox.
